India is the world’s largest processor and manufacturer of polished diamonds. Twelve of 13 diamond stones mined anywhere in the globe pass through the diamond cutting and polishing factories in suburban Mumbai and Surat in Gujarat. Given the huge scale—800,000 workers—India has an edge over low-cost labour rival China.
